Read my account of climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro and help raise money for people in one of the world's poorest countries.
Hi, I'm Chris and I'd like to start by thanking you for coming to visit my site! That's me on the right there, licking a glacier somewhere near the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. I climbed Kilimanjaro back in October 2005 and it was an amazing experience. I don't think I would ever really describe it as fun, but it was certainly unforgettable, and now I'd like to share my experience with you, whilst at the same time trying to raise some money to help the Tanzanian's without whom the climb would be impossible.
So, what's the deal? Well, I'm something of an aspiring travel writer and have written a book about my experiences of climbing Kilimanjaro, called "Kilimanjaro: Hakuna Matata". I'd like to think that it would be pretty useful for anyone who's planning a trip to climb Kilimanjaro or interested in the mountain, as well as being a good read in it's own right. Unfortunately, I couldn't persuade a conventional publisher to publish the book, so I've gone ahead and published it myself using the print on demand service www.lulu.com, from which the book is now for sale. Any money I make from the sale of the book is going to be donated to the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project, an excellent cause that campaigns for improvements in the conditions for porters on Kilimanjaro. The Kilimanjaro porters are probably the hardest working people I've ever met, and they most definitely deserve a fair deal for the work that they do: at the moment they don't necessarily get it, and that's what the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project is trying to change. You can read more about it on "The Cause" page of this site or visit the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project at their own website.
There's some other things on the site that you might also like to check out too. If you want to know more about me, visit the "About Me" page. To get a taste of my writing and find out whether the book is likely to be any good, check out the "My Writing" page - you might be particularly interested to read a short article that I wrote about Kilimanjaro called "An Ice Cube on the Moon". There's more information about "Kilimanjaro: Hakuna Matata" on "The Book" page and some general info about Kilimanjaro on the "Resources" page. If that's not enough, there's some further info on the "FAQ" page, and of course don't forget to say hi using the "Guest Book" - I'm especially keen to hear your feedback on the book!
Then, when you're all finished, you can click on the button below if you want to buy the book. You'll be taken to www.lulu.com, the website of the publishers where you can buy your copy of the book through their secure servers - you'll get a good read and help people in one of the poorest countries in the world. If you'd prefer not to buy online, you should also be able to order the book at your local bookshop by quoting the ISBN number: 978-1-84753-670-9.
